A Journey Through History: 3-Day Normandy and IWM Duxford Tour with Hadley Executive Chauffeurs

At Hadley Executive Chauffeurs, we pride ourselves on delivering seamless, luxury travel experiences tailored to our clients’ exacting schedules and interests. Earlier this summer, we had the privilege of accompanying a group of guests from Texas on an unforgettable three-day tour through some of the most significant sites of World War II history — from the haunting beaches of Normandy to the aviation treasures of IWM Duxford — all in the comfort of our spacious Mercedes V-Class minivan.

Here’s how we made their historic journey effortless, enriching, and truly memorable.

Day 1: London to Normandy — The D-Day Beaches

Our clients had a tight itinerary and very specific points of interest, so punctuality was paramount. At 06:00 sharp, our chauffeur collected them from the Pelham Hotel in London. With ample room for passengers and luggage, the Mercedes V-Class minivan ensured everyone traveled in comfort, with reclining seats and plenty of space to relax on the way to Folkestone.

After a smooth 90-minute drive, we arrived at Le Shuttle terminal, breezed through the automated check-in and border controls, and boarded the 08:07 Eurotunnel service to Calais. Just 25 minutes later, we emerged on the French side, where the adventure truly began.

Our first stop in France was a charming patisserie for freshly baked croissants and rich coffee — a perfect way to welcome the morning. We then set off on the quiet, fast French motorways toward Normandy, with only minimal traffic interrupting the idyllic countryside scenery.

By lunchtime, we arrived at Le Grand Quai for a leisurely meal before continuing another 90 minutes to Omaha Beach. This sobering yet inspiring site features a small museum, moving memorials, and an easy-to-access beach area. We recommend allowing at least 2.5–3 hours here to take it all in — and perhaps pause at one of the local cafés for reflection.

For the evening, our guests checked into the enchanting Château de Sully, nestled in the Normandy countryside. This elegant château boasts beautiful gardens, an orangery dining room, a spa, and luxurious suites. Dinner was an unforgettable seven-course à la carte experience, perfectly paired with fine French wines — a fitting end to a poignant first day.

Day 2: The Normandy American Cemetery and Pointe du Hoc

After a sumptuous French buffet breakfast, our group visited the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, which spans 172 acres and offers a comprehensive visitor centre, guided tours, and numerous points of interest including The Chapel, The Garden of the Missing, and the rows upon rows of white marble graves overlooking the sea.

Next, we headed to Pointe du Hoc, where the dramatic 90-foot cliffs still bear the scars of the battle, and visitors can walk the fortified positions stormed by U.S. Army Rangers on D-Day.

A quick stop followed at Sainte-Mère-Église, made famous by paratrooper John Steele, who famously hung from the church roof during the early hours of June 6, 1944. After a relaxed lunch and coffee in the town square, we made our way back to Calais to catch the train home.

We dropped our guests at Hanbury Manor Marriott just after 21:00 — tired but deeply moved by the day’s experiences.

Day 3: Aviation History at IWM Duxford

On the final day of the tour, we collected the group from Hanbury Manor and headed to IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire, one of the UK’s premier aviation museums. Two members of the party were pilots and aviation enthusiasts, and they were captivated by over a century of aviation history on display.

For those looking to take the experience to the next level, we recommend booking a flight with Ultimate Warbird Flights, which offers the chance to fly in a real Spitfire — truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

We rounded off the day with a relaxed riverside lunch in nearby Cambridge before returning our guests to Hanbury Manor.
